Special Diets

WHAT IS DIET?
Diet can be defined as the NORMAL FOOD WE EAT. BUT there are also SPECIAL DIETS !
FOR EXAMPLE:
  • To lose weight or gain weight diets.
  • Diets because of moral values e.g.. Vegetarian
  • Diets because of food allergies e.g. Wheat flour intolerance.

LOSING WEIGHT
People who want to lose weight usually do so by using one of three possible methods
  1. Decreasing kilo-calorie energy intake.
  2. Increasing kilo-calorie energy expenditure.
  3. Using a combination of both.
So what is Kilo-calorie?
Energy can be measured using JOULES or CALORIES. When large units are involved, such as they are in diets, the term KILOCALORIE is used.
1 kilocalorie =1000 calories.

WHAT IS ENERGY BALANCE ?

Energy balance means taking in (Eating) and using up (Through work, exercise etc) an equal number of calories or Kilocalories.
We all have our own metabolism or rate of using up energy- this is known as our METABOLIC RATE.

  1. Making small changes to your diet or eating plan can be exactly what you need for good health and healthy aging. Many diseases and conditions, including allergies, and/or your family history, can require changes in your diet to keep you feeling well and in good health.

In many cases, a doctor will prescribe a modified diet, along with exercise suited to your condition. Sometimes, this diet therapy is nothing more than a good, nutritious diet balanced in carbohydrates, proteins and fats, or one that requires frequent minimeals. Most special diets can be just as tasty and easy to follow as traditional eating plans.

Nutrients in foods are nature's secret weapons for good health. If you have any of these conditions, or would like to change your diet to improve your health, review the dietary recommendations to ensure you get all the nutrients you need:
